Mike Pence who was the vice president in Donald Trump 's first term claimed that the tariffs that Trump announced on April 2 are nearly ten times more than those imposed during the Trump-Pence administration. Calling the reciprocratory tariffs the largest peacetime tax hike in the US history, Pence said Trump's tariffs will close American families more than $3,500 per year.
"The proposed tariffs would be the highest levels since the 1800s- exceeding the 1920s levels that contributed to the Great Depression," a statement in the document that Mike Pence shared said. The statement was from his Advancing American Freedom Foundation which claimed that these tariffs are capable of spoiling America's golden age before it begins.
Trump announced tariffs for countries except a few in retaliation against the tariff they have on US products. The US announced a baseline 10 per cent tax on imports from all countries with higher rates of up to 49 per cent applied to products from about 60 countries.
Pence commented that this, in turn, would make things more expensive for Americans.
'Mike Pence is just bitter'
Commerce secretary Howard Lutnick who is one of the brains behind the list of tariffs that Donald Trump unveiled reacted to Mike Pence's criticism and brushed it off. "Mike Pence is just bitter. These tariffs are the definition of America First, which is a concept he doesn't understand," Lutnick said taking a jibe at Pence.
MAGA fans supported what Lutnick said and reminded Mike Pence that he was long rejected from MAGA. “Dude we all rejected you,” MAGA influencer Michael J. Morrison wrote. “You don’t need to keep proving us right.”
Countries have started responding to the tariffs which do not begin before the week and Trump, in his Liberation Day speech, already mentioned how countries can lower their tariffs: they need to do the same for US products.
