Iran has issued a stern warning, stating that it is fully prepared to defend its sovereignty if Israel retaliates to Tehran's missile barrage.
Iran's permanent representative to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani , told the UN Security Council on Thursday that Iran was not seeking war but would defend itself if attacked.
He reiterated that Iran will act within its inherent right to self-defence under international law.
Israeli defence minister Yoav Gallant has vowed that Israel’s response to Iran’s launch of around 200 missiles on October 1, will be “deadly, precise, and surprising.”
Iran launched the offensive response to the assassination of two of its key allies: Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, and an Iranian general.
As per the news agency AFP, Iravani said, “Iran stands fully prepared to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity against any aggression targeting its vital interests and security".
He also said that Iran does not want "war or escalation" but will use its "inherent right to self-defence fully in line with international law and will notify the Security Council of its legitimate response".
Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi echoed this sentiment, stating in an interview with Al Jazeera Arabic that while Iran does not desire war. However, it is also not afraid of it and stands ready for any scenario.
The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, a Palestinian militant group supported by Iran, has intensified over the past year and recently expanded to Lebanon, heightening tensions in the region.
Lebanon, which has been severely impacted by the conflict, now faces the risk of a humanitarian collapse, according to Iravani.
He also urged the international community to take action to prevent further deterioration of the situation.
