Recent polling data, showing Democrats still trailing Republicans on economic issues, has left CNN analyst shocked.
CNN analyst Harry Enten was surprised at Democrats' failure to narrow the gap with Republicans on economic issues, traditionally a crucial voter concern, despite economic uncertainties, market fluctuations and President Trump's controversial tariff policies.
The analyst presented data showing Republican gains over Democrats, notwithstanding concerns about Trump's economic strategies. "You'd expect that Democrats would have this massive lead on the economy — it ain't so! It ain't so!" Enten remarked whilst presenting new CNN polling data demonstrating GOP's substantial advantage.
The May survey, released Sunday, showed Republicans maintaining an eight-point lead over Democrats regarding economic views. This result remained within the margin of error compared to a November 2023 poll showing an 11-point Republican advantage.
Enten expressed disbelief at these results, questioning how Republicans maintained their lead despite recession fears, market volatility, and unpopular tariffs. He highlighted additional polls showing even more concerning results for Democrats, including a Reuters/Ipsos poll indicating expanding Republican margins on economic matters under Trump.
“How is that possible, Democrats!?” the CNN analyst said.
“How is it possible after all the recession fears? After the stock market’s been doing all of this, after all the tariffs that Americans are against, and Republicans still hold an eight-point lead on the economy? Are you kidding me!?” Enten continued.
The analyst particularly emphasised polling about which party represents the middle class, traditionally a Democratic stronghold. Recent CNN polls showed the parties at a tie among registered voters, a significant shift from Democrats' 23-point advantage in 1989, which decreased to 17 points in 2016 and four points in 2022.
Enten concluded that this shift in middle-class representation particularly highlighted Democratic challenges, noting that "Donald Trump and the Republican Party have taken that mantle away ... Republicans have completely closed the gap."
