The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a heat advisory for the Bay Area on Tuesday, warning residents to brace for soaring temperatures that could trigger health risks. The alert, released at 8:04 pm Monday, is in effect from 11 am to 7 pm.

The advisory covers San Francisco Bay Shoreline, East Bay Interior Valleys, Santa Clara Valley including San Jose, East Bay Hills and San Francisco County. According to the NWS, “Temperatures up to 100 degrees for parts of the East Bay, mid to upper 90's across portions of the San Francisco Bay Shoreline and the Santa Clara Valley. Mid to upper 80's over eastern portions of San Francisco, can be expected.”

The agency said the hottest period for San Francisco and nearby shoreline areas would occur from late morning through mid-afternoon, though “a return of weak onshore flow is expected to bring some relief.” Officials cautioned that “hot conditions can cause heat illnesses. This level of heat affects anyone without effective cooling and/or adequate hydration. Impacts likely in some health systems, heat-sensitive industries and infrastructure.”

NWS safety recommendations

  • The NWS urged residents to take precautions during the advisory period:
  • Drink plenty of fluids and remain in air-conditioned spaces.
  • Avoid direct sun exposure and check on relatives and neighbours.
  • Never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles.
  • Reschedule strenuous activities for early morning or evening hours.
  • Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing.
  • Be aware of signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
  • Outdoor workers are advised to follow OSHA guidelines by taking regular breaks in shaded or cool environments.
  • In case of heat-related illness, the NWS advised moving the person to a cool, shaded area and calling 911 in an emergency.
