Shubhankar Sharma, Gaganjeet Bhullar way behind as defending champion Xander Schauffele and Jon Rahm share lead

NEW DELHI: India's Shubhankar Sharma and Gaganjeet Bhullar faced challenges in the third round of the Olympic men's golf competition in Paris on Saturday, both finding themselves tied at 48th place among the 60-man field.

Shubhankar hit two birdies and three bogeys, which saw him slipping to a cumulative 2-under for three rounds.

Bhullar, also making his Olympic debut, shot an even par 71 with three birdies and three bogeys. Notably, one of Bhullar's birdies came on the 18th hole.

Xander Schauffele , the reigning Olympic gold medalist, is well-positioned to defend his title.

Schauffele shot a 3-under 68, showcasing a birdie and an eagle on the back nine at Le Golf National.

He shares the lead with Spanish star Jon Rahm .

Rahm, following an excellent streak, recorded a second straight 66 after an initial round of 67. Rahm and Schauffele are both at 14-under. Rahm made an impact with seven birdies in his round, managing to overcome a three-putt bogey.

Tommy Fleetwood is just a shot behind the leaders, sitting at 13-under after carding a 69. His round included three birdies and one bogey, placing him firmly in contention.

Denmark's Nicolai Hojgaard delivered the best round of the day with a remarkable 9-under 62, consisting of seven birdies and an eagle, finishing with no bogeys. Hojgaard's performance also marked the best round of the Games, putting him in a shared fourth place with Hideki Matsuyama at 11-under.

Hideki Matsuyama, the first-round leader, finished with a level-par 71 and remains in the hunt at 11-under. Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, Tim Kim, and Belgium's Thomas Detry are all tied for sixth at 10-under. McIlroy, who missed out on the bronze medal in Tokyo after a seven-man play-off, continues to push for a podium finish.

Scottie Scheffler, the World No. 1, had some trouble towards the end, bogeying the 17th hole. He managed to salvage his round by getting up and down from 90 yards on the final hole to save par.

Spanish star Jon Rahm matched Schauffele's 14-under for the tournament, his consisten play reflected in his excellent 66 which included seven birdies.

Fleetwood trailed the leading duo by a single shot, managing a 69 with three birdies and one bogey to end up at 13-under.



South Korea's Kim is in a tie for sixth at 10-under, along with McIlroy, Scheffler, and Detry. For Kim, an Olympic medal would mean an exemption from military service.

World No. 4 Ludvig Aberg of Sweden, Australia's Jason Day, and Chile's Joaquin Niemann all finished their rounds at 9-under, leaving them five shots off the lead.
