NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday held bilateral meetings with Nepal PM KP Sharma Oli and Crown Prince of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah Al-Sabah in New York.

"The meeting was very good," Nepal PM Oli told ANI, marking the first meeting between the two leaders since he assumed office.

Nepal shares borders with five Indian states—Sikkim, West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand—highlighting the close geographical and cultural connections between the two nations. Under India’s 'Neighbourhood First' policy, Nepal remains a priority partner, underscoring the importance of this bilateral relationship.

Meanwhile, the meeting with Kuwait leader comes after foreign minister S Jaishankar, earlier this month, met with his counterpart Abdullah Ali Al-Yahya to discuss enhancing bilateral relations between the two nations.

India and Kuwait share a long-standing friendship, rooted in historical ties and a strong trading partnership. Notably, the Indian Rupee was the legal tender in Kuwait until 1961.

The year 2021-22 marked the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Kuwait, with India being one of the first countries to establish formal ties following Kuwait’s independence from British rule. Before diplomatic relations were established, India was represented in Kuwait by a Trade Commissioner.
