NEW DELHI: In what was his first bilateral meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian , PM Narendra Modi expressed deep concern over the widening of the conflict in West Asia and reiterated India's call to de-escalate the situation. The meeting took place amid the looming threat of Israeli retaliatory strikes on Iran, following the missile attack that Iran had launched on Israel earlier this month.
According to an Indian readout, Modi also emphasised on protection of civilians and the role of diplomacy in resolving the conflict.
"The PM emphasised the need for dialogue and diplomacy to de-escalate tensions. President Pezeshkian also emphasised the need for peace and harmony in the region and the role that India could play in de-escalating the conflict, given its good relations with all the parties involved," said foreign secretary Vikram Misri.
Modi and Pezeshkian reviewed bilateral relations and discussed ways to further strengthen cooperation in various fields. Noting that the signing of the long-term contract of Chabahar Port is an important milestone in bilateral relations, the two reaffirmed its significance for reconstruction and redevelopment of Afghanistan and enhancing trade and economic linkages with Central Asia,” according to an Indian readout.
