Man sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment in rape case

PATIALA : In a shocking case of sexual assault , the court of District & Sessions Judge , Ropar Ramesh Kumari has sentenced 20 years of imprisonment to a resident of Sri Anandpur Sahib , Ropar district.

The victim, a 19-year-old mentally challenged girl with an IQ 50% lower than average, was working as a helper in a shop when the crime occurred.

The case came to light on September 15, 2022, when the victim's brother filed an FIR at the Sri Anandpur Sahib Police Station under Sections 366, 376-D, 376(2)(j)(i), and 506 of the Indian Penal Code . According to the prosecution, the victim experienced severe stomach pain on September 6, 2022, and a medical examination revealed that she was six months pregnant.

The victim disclosed that Rahul Kumar and a juvenile, who is being tried separately by the Juvenile Justice Board, was working at a confectionery near the shop where she was employed. They forcibly took her to a nearby godown on multiple occasions and raped her, threatening to kill her if she revealed the incident to anyone.

The court convicted Rahul Kumar and sentenced him to rigorous imprisonment for 7 years and a fine of Rs. 5,000 under Section 366 IPC, 20 years and a fine of Rs. 50,000 under Section 376-D IPC, 20 years and a fine of Rs. 50,000 under Section 376 (2)(j)(i)(n) IPC, and 2 years and a fine of Rs. 3,000 under Section 506 IPC. The sentences will run concurrently, and 90% of the fine collected from the convict will be paid as compensation to the victim.
