Congress files police complaint against NDA leaders over 'hate-filled' remarks against Rahul

NEW DELHI: Congress on Wednesday lodged a police complaint against several leaders of the ruling NDA coalition, alleging that their recent statements targeting Rahul Gandhi were intended to jeopardise his safety and security as the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

Several Congress workers also hold a protest in New Delhi against union minister Ravneet Singh Bittu and other BJP leaders over their hate-filled statement on Rahul Gandhi.

The complaint, submitted by AICC treasurer and general secretary Ajay Maken to the Tughlaq Road police station, specifically cited remarks made by BJP leaders Tarvinder Singh Marwah, Ravneet Singh Bittu, Raghuraj Singh, and Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad.

Maken, speaking to the media after filing the complaint, expressed his disappointment saying, "We all know that late Indira Gandhi ji and late Rajiv ji have sacrificed their lives for the country. Even after that, they are giving such threats."

Maken said that politics in India cannot stoop to a lower level than this.

He further added that the BJP had not taken any action against the multiple leaders who had made such statements and that Rahul Gandhi's advocacy for marginalised communities was the reason behind the BJP's dislike for his words. However, Maken asserted that the Congress party would not be intimidated by such threats.

"Not just one BJP leader, but many leaders have said such things, but BJP did not take any action," Maken said while interacting with reporters.

"Rahul Gandhi talks about SC, ST, OBC, tribal and minority people. That is why BJP people do not like his words. This is the reason why they are threatening him," Maken added.

"But let me tell you -- This is the Congress party and we are not going to be scared or cowed down," he asserted.

The police complaint detailed the specific statements made by the NDA leaders , including Marwah's alleged assassination threat against Rahul Gandhi, Gaikwad's announcement of a bounty for anyone who would "cut the tongue" of the Leader of Opposition, Bittu's labelling of Gandhi as the "number one terrorist of the country," and Raghuraj Singh's similar remarks.

"On September 11, Marwah in a BJP event openly issued assassination threat against Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, wherein he said that 'Rahul Gandhi baaz aaja, nahi toh aane wale time mein tera bhi wohi haal hoga jo teri dadi ka haal hua (you better behave, or you will meet the same fate as your grandmother)'", Maken said in a police complaint.

Congress argued that these statements exhibited personal hatred against Gandhi and were made with the intention of provoking public outrage, inciting violence, and breaching the peace, particularly in light of the ongoing elections in Jammu & Kashmir and Haryana.

The complaint further said that the BJP and its allies were attempting to obstruct Rahul Gandhi in the discharge of his public duties by calling him a "terrorist" and undermining the public office he holds.

The party also alleged that these acts were part of a well-planned criminal conspiracy, hatched by the BJP and NDA leaders along with their associates, to create enmity and incite aggression against Rahul Gandhi and the Congress party.

Consequently, the complaint requested the registration of an FIR under relevant provisions of the BNS, 2023, against the named individuals and their associates.
