NEW DELHI: As Kerala marked its foundation day, chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Friday warned people of "communal political forces" trying to undermine the state's 68 year progress and urged them to rise above religion, caste and regional differences to embrace humanity.
Pointing to the foundation laid by the national and renaissance movement, which embraced the values of democracy, secularism, and social justice, the chief minister said it was important to celebrate the relevance of Kerala Formation Day against the backdrop of what he called "communal political forces trying to weaken" the southern state.
"We have built all these achievements on the foundation laid by the national movement and the renaissance movement. The current situation where communal political forces are trying to weaken it adds to the relevance of this Kerala Formation Day celebration. This is the time when everyone should be ready to understand the great cultural heritage of modern Kerala," he said.
"Kerala has always maintained the values of democracy, secularism and social justice and has grown as a model for the entire country in terms of quality of life and people's welfare. Kerala's achievements in many fields including health and education have attracted worldwide attention," CM Vijayan said in a post on X.
Though he explicitly did not name or single out a party, the reference was clear. The chief minister often has accused BJP of playing communal politics and accused the Congress of "making adjustments with communal forces ". The development also happens a day after he hit out at the Centre over the alleged lack of financial assistance for the rehabilitation of the victims of the Wayanad landslides that killed more than 200 people. CM Vijayan also alleged the Centre and the Congress of being against the state’s development and accused the Union government of “cruel neglect ” for not “sanctioning a single penny as assistance” for rehabilitation.
Further in his remarks on Kerala foundation day, the chief minister said that the people of the state must ensure that the efforts of leaders who fought for united Kerala will not go in vain.
"Let's take on the challenges of the new age and make the glory of Kerala brighter. Let us embrace humanity beyond caste, religion and regional differences and move forward hand in hand with each other. Wishing everyone a very happy Kerala Formation Day".
November 1 is celebrated annually as the day marking the birth of the modern state of Kerala. The state was officially formed in 1956 through the merger of the Travancore-Cochin state with the Malabar district of Madras and the Kasaragod taluk from South Canara district.
