Elon Musk's net worth more than $250 billion: The visionary behind X, Tesla, and SpaceX

Send Push
Billionaire Elon Musk , the head of X (formerly Twitter), Tesla, and SpaceX , continues to make headlines almost daily. As the world's richest person, Musk uses his platform to voice opinions on various topics, while also pushing forward with ventures like brain chip trials at Neuralink, transforming X into a super app, and expanding his role in the AI sector, despite previous warnings about AI’s risks to humanity. His actions, including suing OpenAI’s creator and making political comments, have sparked significant controversy.

Elon Musk's early life and beginnings

Elon Musk was born in Pretoria, South Africa, where his entrepreneurial spirit emerged early. He went door-to-door selling homemade Easter eggs and created his first video game at 12. His childhood was challenging, marked by bullying, his parents' divorce, and social struggles linked to Asperger’s Syndrome.

Musk moved to North America for college, first attending school in Canada and later studying economics and physics at the University of Pennsylvania. According to his first wife, Justine Musk, even before his wealth, Musk was persistent, never taking no for an answer.
Musk, often described as a “mad genius” or “Twitter’s biggest troll,” is known for his high ambitions and controversial behaviour. He’s been involved in legal disputes over racial discrimination and misleading statements. Despite these challenges, Musk openly admits his flaws, acknowledging his mistakes while emphasising his achievements.

Musk building a billion-dollar fortune

Musk dropped out of Stanford’s physics program to launch two tech startups during the dot-com boom of the 1990s.
His more recent ventures include acquiring Twitter in 2022, rebranding it as X, cutting its workforce, and introducing new premium subscription models. Musk aims to turn X into an "everything app," although the platform's value has dropped from $44 billion to $19 billion. Elon Musk founded Zip2 in 1995, a company providing online maps and business directories, which was sold to Compaq in 1999 for $307 million. He then launched X.com, an online financial services company, which became PayPal . In 2002, PayPal was sold to eBay for $1.5 billion.

Musk, driven by the belief that humanity needs to be a multiplanetary species, founded SpaceX in 2002 to create affordable rockets. SpaceX developed the Falcon 1, Falcon 9, and Falcon Heavy rockets, significantly reducing launch costs. SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft, used for transporting cargo and astronauts, became the first commercial spacecraft to dock with the International Space Station in 2012. Musk’s long-term vision includes building bases on the Moon and Mars with the Super Heavy–Starship system.

Elon Musk’s ventures in artificial intelligence

Musk, an early investor in ChatGPT’s parent company, later parted ways with OpenAI and launched his own AI firm, xAI, in 2023. He later sued OpenAI, criticising its shift away from its non-profit, open-source foundation.

Elon Musk’s net worth
Despite his contradictions, Musk’s fortune has continued to grow. As per Forbes, Elon Musk’s net worth is estimated at $250.8 billion.
