Their constant love, support, care, and understanding led Alex Ovechkin today to beat The Great One’s record of most-scored career NHL goals - 894! Alexander Ovechkin defeated Wayne Gretzky by a goal! Ovechkin stands tall at 895 now! Securing 895 was not easy. Alex Ovechkin’s family’s constant support led that to transpire into reality. And so here we are going to talk about Alexander Ovechkin’s parents, Mikhail Ovechkin and Tatyana Ovechkina.



Alex Ovechkin’s father, Mikhail Ovechkin, would bring goalie helmets for Alex Ovechkin when he was a kid





“My father would go on some trips and bring me some goalie helmets. I didn’t know what it was, except it was something about hockey. When I was a little kid, everything was about hockey, hockey, hockey.” shared Alex Ovechkin about his father, Mikhail Ovechkin, with NHL.com, back in 2008 when he first got drafted by the Washington Capitals in the longest-ever deal of 13 years!



Alex Ovechkin’s father, Mikhail Ovechkin, was a professional soccer player, but an injury cut short his soccer career. Mikhail Ovechkin played for the Dynamo Moscow.






Back in 2018, when Alex Ovechkin won the Stanley Cup Championship, his father, Mikhail Ovechkin, shared with NHL.com, “I can’t even put it to words. Thirteen years, we were working toward that goal, and finally, to win the Stanley Cup, it’s a huge happiness. Huge happiness.” The same time around, Alex Ovechkin shared, “My dad was a professional soccer player, and he got hurt. So it was fun. He was there, too. He was watching, and it was a great night.”

On February 15, 2023, Mikhael Ovechkin passed away. The official X account of the Washington Capitals shared a post that read:


“The Washington Capitals organization is saddened to hear of the passing of our captain Alex Ovechkin’s father, Mr. Mikhael Ovechkin. Mr. Ovechkin was a true gentleman and was such a significant and consistent presence at Capitals games and practices. With a constant smile on his face, he loved interacting with our fans and expressing his gratitude for their support of his son, of whom he was incredibly proud. Our organization’s thoughts are with the Ovechkin family at this difficult time.”


Tom Wilson said, "What we can be is be there for him like he's been there for us." after Alex Ovechkin's father, Mikhail Ovechkin passed away.



Alex Ovechkin’s mother, Tatyana Ovechkina, is a former basketball player





Alex Ovechkin’s mother, Tatyana has been a constant presence at the Capitals games ever since. She was even present to watch her son achieve the unachieveable - break Wayne Gretzky’s 31 YO unflinching record of most-scored career NHL goals - 894!



Alex Ovechkin’s mother is a former basketball player. Tatyana Ovechkina represented the Soviet Union’s National Women’s Squad. Her team went on to win two Olympic Gold Medals in 1976 and 1980! Not only that, greatness runs in the blood of Ovechkin. Tatyana Ovechkina has also won the 1975 World Championship and 6 European Championships!



Tatyana Ovechkina’s basketball jersey number was 8. Alex Ovechkin wears the same number 8 on his Washington Capitals jersey. Greatness runs in the Ovechkin family.






Tatyana Ovechkina shared a video message for Alex Ovechkin after his 895th goal, "Sasha, great job! You are an amazing person and I am so proud of you. I love you very much. I know that your dad is also incredibly proud of you right now because he did so much to help you become not only a great player but also a wonderful person."
