Ravichandran Ashwin's sixth Test ton vs Bangladesh seals rare cricketing feat

NEW DELHI: Ravichandran Ashwin has achieved a historic milestone as the first cricketer to register 20-plus fifty-plus scores alongside 30-plus five-wicket hauls in Test cricket .

During the first Test against Bangladesh in Chennai, Ashwin showcased his all-round brilliance once again.

With India struggling at 144/6, Ashwin counter-attacked with Ravindra Jadeja . He scored an unbeaten 102 runs off 112 balls, hitting 10 fours and two sixes, at a strike rate of 91.07.

Ashwin, who has 36 five-wicket hauls, also boasts six centuries and 14 fifties in Test cricket. He is the only cricketer to achieve 20 or more fifty-plus scores and 30 five-wicket hauls in Tests.

From position number eight or below, Ashwin has four Test centuries. Daniel Vettori from New Zealand holds the record for the most centuries from number eight or below, with five centuries.

At the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Ashwin has an impressive record. In five Tests and seven innings, he has scored 331 runs at an average of 55.16, including two centuries and a fifty.

He also has taken 30 wickets at an average of 23.60 at the venue, with his best figures being 7/103. He has four five-wicket hauls and a ten-wicket haul there.

Ashwin joins elite all-rounders like Garfield Sobers, Kapil Dev , Chris Cairns, and Ian Botham who have multiple five-wicket hauls and centuries at a single venue in Test cricket.

Bangladesh elected to bowl first after winning the toss. The Indian top order collapsed, leaving the team at 34/3.

Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 56 off 118 balls with nine fours, and Rishabh Pant made 39 from 52 balls with six fours, putting together a 62-run partnership for the fourth wicket.

After another collapse to 144/6, Ashwin and Jadeja formed a crucial 195-run partnership. Jadeja contributed with an unbeaten 86 runs off 117 balls, hitting 10 fours and two sixes. India ended the day at 339/6.

For Bangladesh, Hasan Mahmud was the standout bowler, taking 4 wickets for 58 runs. He dismantled the Indian top order, dismissing Rohit Sharma (6), Shubman Gill (0), and Virat Kohli (6).
