After four long years of this and that, the deal is finally through, and the Minnesota Timberwolves can now change hands from Glen Taylor to Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez . Lore and A-Rod bought the team from Taylor for $1.5 billion, completing the transfer after a lengthy dispute that ran for years. And with the change in ownership, there is yet another thing that could happen - the strained relationship between the team and their legend - Kevin Garnett , finally getting a redo.
Minnesota Timberwolves new owners want to make things right with their team legend
Now that the Minnesota Timberwolves belong to Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez, and Glen Taylor is out of the picture, rumors say that the relationship between the team and one of its biggest players - Wolves legend Kevin Garnett, is finally going to get better. And apparently, they are also thinking of finally retiring Garnett's #21 jersey from the team for good.
According to ESPN's Shams Charania, who spoke during The Pat McAfee Show, the new owners want to rebuild the team's relationship with Garnett, saying:
"Now that they’re under new ownership, the Timberwolves will try to rekindle their relationship with Kevin Garnett and potentially retire his jersey."
After the fallout between Taylor and Garnett, this will be a happy occasion for the fans if their team legend can get the honor he rightly deserves.
What happened between Glen Taylor and Kevin Garnett?
While the main issue started after Kevin Garnett came back to the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2015, many believe that he and Glen Taylor had problems way before. His first stint with the team was from 1995 to 2007, and during the first trade, before he left for the Boston Celtics, things had become a bit strained. But his old coach, Flip Saunders, made him reconsider coming back to Minnesota under the impression that he would have a future role with the team.
Unfortunately, Saunders died in 2015, a little while after Garnett had made his return. And the alleged promise of Garnett having a future role with the team went away with Saunders' passing. Garnett publicly called Taylor a "snake" after the incident, saying "I won’t forgive Glen for that.” Hopefully, all that negativity can be avoided with this new change and the Wolves and KG can redo their once strained relationship, and make things right.
