NEW DELHI: Indian men's hockey captain Harmanpreet Singh has been nominated for the FIH Player of the Year award. The International Hockey Federation ( FIH ) released the list of shortlisted candidates, which also includes renowned goalkeeper PR Sreejesh for the Goalkeeper of the Year honour.

India emerged victorious in the penalty shootout with a 4-2 scoreline, advancing to the semifinal. They subsequently defeated Spain 2-1 to clinch the bronze medal.

"The list of nominees was established by an Expert Panel composed of players, coaches and officials selected by each of their Continental Federations," the FIH said on its website.

"The expert panel was provided access to match data from all international matches held in 2024, including Test matches, the FIH hockey Pro League, FIH Hockey Nations Cups, FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers and the Olympic Games Paris 2024 before establishing the final list of nominees."

The selection process for the national associations will remain open until October 11. During this period, various stakeholders, including the captains and coaches of the respective national teams, fans, players, officials, and media, will cast their votes. The national associations are represented by their corresponding national teams in this voting procedure.

"The votes of the Expert Panel count for 40 per cent of the overall result. Those from National Associations count for a further 20 per cent. The fans and other players (20 per cent) as well as the media (20 per cent) will make the remaining 40 per cent," the FIH stated.

In a significant performance at the Paris Olympics , Indian athletes Harmanpreet and Sreejesh played key roles in helping their team win a bronze medal. Harmanpreet stood out by scoring 10 goals, the most by any player in the tournament.
