City Kali Puja weaves a tale of tradition with its pandal theme

The historic Aditya Bari Kali Puja, a revered tradition with roots stretching back over 300 years, returned this year with a vibrant new theme, ‘Gamcha of Bengal’. This year’s celebration paid tribute to the iconic gamcha, a handwoven cotton towel, whose enduring presence in Bengali households signifies deep tradition and utility. Through its colourful designs and patterns, the gamcha showcased the spirit of Bengal, and the Aditya Bari Kali Puja aims to honour this symbol of Bengali heritage. The 2024 celebrations featured an illustrious gathering of dignitaries, including Andrew Flemming, British Deputy High Commissioner; celebrities Neel Bhattacharya, Trina Saha Bhattacharya, Sauraseni Maitra among others.

In a powerful tribute to Bengal’s rural artistry, the pandal and decor captured the essence of the gamcha through an intricate array of red, white, and other iconic hues. The colours and patterns, meticulously designed to replicate gamcha weaves, invite visitors to experience the beauty and craftsmanship of this traditional fabric. By celebrating the gamcha, Aditya Bari reminded visitors of the profound connection Bengal has with its handicrafts and the artisans who bring these age-old designs to life.

Speaking about the significance of this year’s theme, Anirban Aditya said, “The gamcha is more than just a piece of fabric – it’s a reflection of our people’s strength, adaptability, and deep-rooted pride in our culture. Through this theme, we hope to inspire a renewed appreciation for the beauty and simplicity of Bengal’s heritage, while honouring the artisans who have preserved these traditions. Aditya Bari Kali Puja is dedicated to celebrating this spirit and reconnecting our community with the vibrant legacy of Bengal’s artisans." To this, Ankit Aditya, added, "Every year I design the concept and theme keeping in mind the legacy and culture that defines us. This year, 'The Household of Bengal' celebrates the soul of Bengali homes – honouring the simplicity and warmth that shape our daily lives. Elements like Haath Pakha, Gamcha, and the Laal Paar Shada Sari embody cherished memories and the strength of our mothers, the heart of every Bengali household."
