Munawar rushed back to Mumbai; received death threats

Send Push
High drama ensued in Delhi on Sunday when authorities got information about a potential threat to stand-up comic Munawar Faruqui. The incident occurred at the IGI Indoor Stadium and The Suryaa Hotel in south Delhi, where Faruqui was staying. After a planned operation, Faruqui left for Mumbai, where a comprehensive inquiry commenced.

The Delhi Police responded to intelligence reports concerning a potential danger to Munawar Faruqui's life, triggering immediate action and increased security measures at both the stadium and the hotel. Faruqui, who was in town for the "Entertainers Cricket League 2024" event, found himself in the centre of a coordinated police operation to protect his safety. The police received information late Saturday night while investigating a shooting incident at Greater Kailash-I that culminated in the murder of businessman Nadir Shah.

As the investigation into the shooting continued, authorities began questioning the suspects involved. During questioning, the suspects admitted that they had done reconnaissance at The Suryaa Hotel for what seemed to be a targeted murder. Although the specifics of their intended target were initially unknown, additional investigation revealed a more unsettling revelation: Munawar Faruqui may be the target of an imminent threat.

When the police received this information, they acted promptly to safeguard both The Suryaa Hotel and the IGI Indoor Stadium, where a cricket league match between the Haryanvi Hunters and Mumbai Disruptors was scheduled. Faruqui was staying at the same hotel as fellow artist and YouTuber Elvish Yadav, who was also taking part in the league.

Chaos broke out at the IGI Stadium as officers stormed the area to assess the threat and evacuate people. Social media instantly erupted with videos of police officers emptying the stadium. Fans were observed leaving the event amid mounting fears about safety.

A different police team led by DCP Pratiksha Godara inspected the Suryaa Hotel, closely scrutinising entry and departure points. Hotel employees reported that Munawar Faruqui was staying on the first floor, which may have put him in close proximity to the suspects' reconnaissance activities. Plainclothes officers were stationed throughout the hotel to monitor the situation, and heightened security precautions were swiftly implemented.

As the situation worsened, police officers encouraged Faruqui to take the threat seriously. Initially reluctant to call attention to the situation, the comic was eventually persuaded to depart Delhi. He later told The Times of India that his departure was due to a flight he wanted to catch, but declined to elaborate on the circumstances owing to security concerns.

Meanwhile, the police are conducting a thorough investigation into the nature of the threat and its intended target. According to sources, Faruqui's security measures are being reviewed and analysed to ensure his safety following these developments.

However, doubts remain about the eventual aim of the threats, especially since the suspects had conducted many reconnaissance trips without being expressly instructed who they were targeting.

The threat stemmed from a larger probe into the shooting of businessman Nadir Shah. On Thursday night, Shah was shot and died in Delhi's upscale Greater Kailash-I neighbourhood. During interrogation, the individuals arrested in connection with the murder revealed that they had been told to monitor The Suryaa Hotel for a potential target. Shah, who was apparently a frequent hotel guest, could have been the culprits' intended target.

However, as authorities investigated the case further, they discovered a suspected secondary plot aimed at Munawar Faruqui. The fact that Faruqui and Elvish Yadav were both staying at the hotel, as well as participating in a high-profile public event, heightened the case's complexity.

The cops responded quickly, which was critical in stopping the situation from escalating. Both teams mobilised at the stadium and the hotel worked together to neutralise the perceived threat.
