At the 44th convocation of Deen Dayal Upadhyay Gorakhpur University , Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel on Monday emphasized the twin priorities of academic discipline and global exposure for students . Speaking at Baba Gambhirnath Auditorium, Patel underscored that a minimum of 75% attendance should be compulsory across schools, colleges, and universities, a move aimed at ensuring students fully engage with lectures, laboratories, and libraries.
“Parents work hard to educate their children,” Anandiben Patel said, highlighting the responsibility of students to utilize the learning opportunities presented to them. By mandating consistent attendance, she argued, institutions can foster both academic progress and a disciplined approach to study.
Research as a societal tool
Beyond attendance, Anandiben Patel stressed the significance of research in higher education. She urged students and faculty to identify prevalent societal problems, study them meticulously, and ensure that findings reach relevant officials so that actionable solutions can be implemented. “Government grants for research should focus on projects that cater to societal welfare,” she said, framing research as not just academic exercise but a civic responsibility.
A global perspective on learning
Anandiben Patel, who also serves as the Chancellor of all state universities, highlighted the value of international collaboration. She called on students to explore universities in neighbouring countries, observe their education systems, and bring back valuable experiences to enhance their own institutions. Speaking on the enrolment of foreign students, she emphasized that they should be treated with cooperation and affection, reflecting the inclusive culture India is known for.
“NAAC, NIRF, and world rankings play a crucial role in attracting foreign students,” she noted. She urged universities to continuously focus on improving quality to maintain global standards and enrich the learning environment for all students.
Recognizing achievement
During the convocation, the governor awarded medals to 161 students and handed out PhD degrees to 301 researchers, celebrating both academic excellence and pioneering research. The event also saw Padma Shri Prof Ashutosh Sharma, Institute Chair Professor at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, being conferred an honorary Doctor of Science degree.
Lessons for students
Anandiben Patel’s message was clear: Consistent classroom engagement, rigorous research, and global learning are complementary tools for student success. By combining disciplined study with exposure to international educational practices, students can not only excel academically but also contribute meaningfully to society.
In an era where learning is increasingly global and competitive, her address served as both a reminder and a roadmap: Success in education is built on attendance, inquiry, and a willingness to learn beyond borders.
