THANE: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) arrested a police officer and a civilian for demanding and accepting a bribe in Thane city police. Police Constable Ganesh Rathod from Daighar Police Station and civilian Gupta from Dombivli East were caught accepting Rs 5,000 during a trap operation, said Shivraj Patil, SP ACB of Thane unit.

The case began when the complainant sought help regarding a motorcycle dispute. The complainant sold a friend's motorcycle to a dealer through an online website but failed to provide a no-objection certificate, leading to threats from the dealer demanding a refund.

After the complainant called the emergency number, police granted the dealer a 20-day resolution period.

On April 15, Rathod allegedly demanded Rs 20,000 to settle the case, prompting the complainant to approach the ACB. During verification with witnesses, the officer reduced his demand to Rs 10,000 and eventually agreed to Rs 5,000.

He instructed the complainant to give the money to Gupta at a pawn shop on Shilfata-Mahape Road, said Patil.

The ACB caught Gupta accepting the bribe at 8:16 PM on Thursday. Both suspects were taken into custody under the Prevention of Corruption Act. Further investigation is ongoing into the case.
