Jamshedpur mourns as India loses a 'Ratan'

Ranchi/ Jamshedpur: It was a sad moment for the country in general and Steel City in particular as the news of Ratan Tata’s death reached here late on Wednesday night.

Amid festivities, the news came as a jolt. People from all walks of life mourned Tata’s death. Most remembered him as an industrialist and a philanthropic icon.

Chairman, Tata Sons, N Chandrasekaran made the official announcement of the demise of chairman emeritus Tata Sons, Ratan Naval Tata, on X, bidding him a farewell, describing him as “truly uncommon leader whose immeasurable contributions have shaped not only the Tata group but also the very fabric of our nation.”

Remembering Tata as a mentor, guide and friend, he further wrote, “With an unwavering commitment to excellence, integrity and innovation, the Tata Group under his stewardship expanded its global footprint while always remaining true to its moral compass.” The 86-year-old entrepreneur had started his journey with the Tata Group, founded by his great-grandfather in 1962, and rose to become the chairman, running the show for 20 years.

First generation entrepreneur Shesh Nath Pathak of Jamshedpur remembers the day in 2017, when Tata introduced the newly appointed chairperson, Chandrasekaran, to the people of Jamshedpur on the Founder’s Day event.

“Tata expressed confidence that the city would witness new level of progress under the new president. After Tata, the legacy of enriching the city rests with the incumbent chairman,” he said.

“He was a doyen of the industry who was always keen on pioneering new ideas,” said Singhbhum Chamber of Commerce and Industry president, Vijay Anand Moonka.

Singhbhum Industries Association president, Santosh Singh said, “He will be remembered as the champion of the cause of India.”
