Twin fire in city, no casualty reported

Guwahati: Two separate incidents of fire were reported across Guwahati on Wednesday, while no casualty was reported from either incident.

The first incident occurred in the morning at Sarabbhati’s Gopinath Nagar on BK Kakati road, when multiple gas cylinders burst. The severity of the blasts were was such that it demolished all the items in and around the house.

Fire and emergency services inspector, Lutfar Dewan, said, “The call came at 10.59 am. Properties worth Rs 25 lakh have been damaged, while properties worth Rs 15 lakh have been saved. Even the nearby mosque sustained some damage,” Dewan said. House owner Vishal Kumar Upadhyay said that both his children, Mayur and Mayuri, sustained minor burns while trying to douse the fire.

Personnel from Guwahati, Pandu, Dispur and Chandmari fire and emergency services (F&ESS) were pressed into action, before the fire could be extinguished in an hour-and-a-half.

A second fire broke out in a residential house, in the afternoon, at Sreenagar bylane.

Personnel from the Dispur F&ESS said that while the reason behind the fire was yet to be ascertained, an investigation will be carried out to determine its source. “The incident took place at 1.18 pm, when a mansion made of tarza, wood and tin roofing caught fire,” the rescue personnel said.

According to the SDRF disaster report, the operation lasted for two hours and two fire tenders from Dispur F&ESS were dispatched to the scene. Additionally, two fire tenders from Chandmari F&ESS and one from Panbazar F&ESS were also deployed. The report stated that properties worth Rs 20 lakh were damaged during the incident.
