Senior citizens' welfare body hosts cultural programme

Guwahati: The senior citizens welfare council of Assam, under the department of social justice and empowerment, organized a Sanskritik (cultural) samaroh on Monday to foster inclusivity and promote community life among the elderly. The event featured a singing competition exclusively for senior citizens, marking the first time such an event has been held in Assam.

The inaugural program took place concurrently in Kamrup (Metro) and Kamrup districts, signaling the start of the competition, which will be rolled out in all other districts of Assam from Sept 18.

Mudassar Nazar Hussain, the branch officer of the senior citizens welfare council, stated, “People above 60 can participate in this inter district competition, and winners from each districts will participate in a three-day singing competition, beginning Sept 25, which will also include one act plays. There can be only 10 members in a team and 60% of the crew members have to be senior citizens.”

Participants can choose to sing any three songs from a selection of five compositions by renowned artists Bhupen Hazarika, Jyoti Prasad Agarwala and Bishnu Prasad Rabha.
