Colva: South Goa principal sessions judge Sherin Paul on Wednesday convicted Gulshan Tirkey for the 2021 murder of his wife, Basanti.
According to police reports, the accused, then 34 years old and originally from Jharkhand, was residing in a rented home at Sao Jose de Areal with his 20-year-old wife and their three-year-old child.
Frequent disputes allegedly arose between the couple due to Gulshan’s suspicions that his wife was involved in an extramarital affair.
On Nov 7, 2021, during one such altercation, Gulshan fatally stabbed Basanti with a sharp weapon. After committing the crime, he fled the scene with their child.
Police launched an immediate manhunt and succeeded in apprehending the accused within a few hours.
Judge Paul found Gulshan guilty of murder under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. The court will now hear the accused on the point of sentence.
