CHENNAI: A fun-intended Instagram reel has landed a woman temple trustee and three women employees of a temple in trouble as the Madras high court has directed authorities to take departmental action against them.
"How can the trustee and its employees make a mockery of the temple by shooting comic videos, that too in front of the picture of the deity?" Justice M Dhandapani wondered.
Asserting that the trustee of Devi Karumari Amman Temple in Tiruverkadu should not have behaved in such a manner, the judge on Thursday directed the Hindu religious and charitable endowments department to take appropriate action against her and three others.
The court then adjourned the hearing to Oct 29 for the department to file an action-taken report.
The court passed the orders on a plea moved by Jayaprakash of Nagapattinam seeking action against the trustee and three employees based on his complaint.
According to the petitioner, trustee Valarmathi and a group of 12 women performed a dance in front of the temple’s sanctum sanctorum on April 24 and videographed it. The same was posted in social media. The petitioner claimed that the video offended the sentiments of thousands of devotees of the temple. The video had been recorded by the trustee and her team, violating the prohibition against the use of mobile phones in and around the temple, he said.
He alleged that the dance and recording were well planned, as the crew were found to be dressed uniformly and performed in a synchronised manner. Though he made a representation to the HR and CE department seeking action against the incident, the department failed to act as the trustee was an influential person in her community, he alleged.
