Prayagraj: The Alopshankari Temple in the city, one of its kind in the world for being the only Shaktipeeth without an idol of the goddess, is being renovated by the state govt ahead of the Maha Kumbh to enhance the spiritual experience of the visitors.
The govt is investing Rs 7 crore in its reconstruction, with over 55% of the work already completed and full completion targeted by Dec 15.
Situated in Alopibagh, the temple's sanctum features a platform with a well beneath the suspended cradle. According to the Puranas, the palm of Mata Sati's right hand fell into a pond and then vanished, leading to the temple being named Devi Alopshankari. It is regarded as one of the foremost Shaktipeeths dedicated to the Goddess.
Outside the main shrine, statues of Ganesha, Shiva, Kartikeya and Hanuman are present, along with a nearby Shankaracharya Peeth. A plan in this regard was prepared on the instructions of Mahant Yamuna Puri, secretary, Mahanirvani Akhara, one of the 13 recognised ancient Hindu monastic orders of the country. "The mandapam (general gathering area) has a special place in South Indian temples. Along these very lines, a huge mandapam is being built here. Also, fine artwork is being made on the back wall of the temple. Keeping in mind the architectural beauty of the temple complex, construction is being done towards Japla Devi at the back as well," said Puri.
There will also be a yagna kund and a huge platform.
Located at a distance of about 6 km from Prayagraj Junction, the temple is especially popular during the Navratri fair, drawing devotees from all over the country and abroad.
