New Delhi: With concerns being raised over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, the US, which is a key ally of Israel, has given a 30-day ultimatum to Tel Aviv to address the crisis, warning that it would halt weapons supply if it does not see significant improvements on the ground. The warning was issued by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin through a letter to Israel Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer. Noting that humanitarian assistance entering the Strip has plummeted in recent months, the senior US officials said such developments call into question Israel’s commitment towards humanitarian assistance in Gaza and that it is using US weapons in line with international law."We are now writing to underscore the US government’s deep concern over the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza, and seek urgent and sustained actions by your government this month to reverse this trajectory," the letter said.Washington pointed out that Israeli evacuation orders have forced 1.7 million people into the narrow, coastal al-Mawasi area where they are at "high risk of lethal contagion" due to extreme overcrowding, and that their survival needs cannot be met.ALSO READ: "We are particularly concerned that recent actions by the Israeli government - including halting commercial imports, denying or impeding nearly 90% of humanitarian movements between northern and southern Gaza in September, continuing burdensome and excessive dual-use restrictions, and instituting new vetting and onerous liability and customs requirements for humanitarian staff and shipments - together with increased lawlessness and looting - are contributing to an accelerated deterioration in the conditions in Gaza," it adds.Israel provided written commitment last March in order to ensure its compliance with a National Security Memorandum (NSM) issued by Biden in February. The memo applies to all recipients of US security assistance. At least 50 people were killed in the latest operation by Israel.Several countries, seen as ally of Israel, have condemned the "killing of innocent civilians by Israel in recent operations in Gaza". Australia described the humanitarian situation in northern Gaza as "unacceptable".The conflict between Israel and Hamas, which began following the October 7, 2023 attack by Palestinian militants on southern Israeli communities, has escalated significantly. As of 13 May 2024, the UN has reported that the 35,000 who have died in the conflict includes 7,797 minors, 4,959 women and 1,924 elderly with confirmed identities.
