Hathras: A bizarre incident has come to light in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, where siblings allegedly married each other along with several other married couples, who tied the knot again to fraudulently receive the government benefits under the Mass Marriage Scheme, which is meant for newly married couples from the economically weaker sections. The incident caught the eye when residents filed a complaint, which led the local SDM to take action and order an investigation into the matter.

Several couples, who were already married, orchestrated the scam to allegedly enjoy the benefits under the Mukhyamantri Samuhik Vivah Yojana, which promises Rs 35,000 in the bank of the bride, essential goods worth Rs 10,000 for the couple, and Rs 6,000 expenditure in solemnizing the marriage.

According to several media reports, two married couples from Sikandrarao were remarried under a community marriage scheme. A government employee, as per the reports, planned these fraudulent marriages to exploit the scheme for financial gains.

Following the complaint about a brother and a sister who allegedly married each other to get benefits of the scheme, SMD Ved Singh Chauhan assured a thorough investigation and appropriate action against those responsible. The mass marriage event, where 217 couples were married, took place in Hathras on December 15, 2023.
