Amid a tightly contested race in the days before the November 5 election, a poll from Iowa has sent shockwaves across Donald Trump's campaign. Despite long-standing certainty in this campaign trail about a victory for Donald Trump in the state, a poll released Thursday showed Kamala Harris ahead of the 78-year-old in Iowa. The latest edition of the Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll released Sunday showed Harris with a three-point lead over Trump in Iowa. While 47% polled in favor of Harris, Trump received 44%. At a time when most battleground states are evenly tied, paving the way for a savory presidential race, the new poll in Iowa has opened the possibilities of a new swing state to emerge. Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll has consistently shown a Trump lead in the state through most of the campaign trail. Back in June 2024, Trump had as much as an 18-point lead over Biden in the state. It was followed by a September poll that had him four points ahead of Harris. However, the latest poll shows that the Vice President has leapfrogged ahead of Trump in the state in recent months. The poll surveyed 808 likely voters from Iowa, including those who have already voted, between October 28 and 31. It had a margin of error of plus or minus 3,4 points. “It’s hard for anybody to say they saw this coming,” said pollster J. Ann Selzer, president of Selzer, the body conducting the Mediacom Iowa Poll “She has clearly leaped into a leading position.” “Age and gender are the two most dynamic factors that are explaining these numbers,” Selzer added. Notably, Trump won Iowa in 2020 with 53.1% votes, while Joe Biden received 44.9%.
