Just months after playing each other in a historic semi-final at the Men's T20 World Cup 2024, which was the first instance of Afghanistan playing in the last four of any senior ICC event, the rising Asian stars will once again face the Proteas in a three-match ODI series starting from Wednesday (September 18), with all matches set to take place at the Sharjaj Cricket Ground. Afghanistan will return to play home matches in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) after using India as the home venue for the ill-fated one-off Test match against New Zealand. Afghanistan's first-ever Test match against the Black Caps saw not a single ball bowled in Greater Noida. South Africa and India are the only two full-nation member teams that Afghanistan have not yet beaten. This series will give a golden chance to achieve the feat for the Afghans. Previously, the two sides have met each other in 2 ODIs and 3 T20Is, with the Proteas winning all five matches. South Africa have sent a young team to the UAE, in which they also play three ODIs and two T20Is against Ireland. As far as the ODi team is concerned, regular skipper Temba Bavuma will lead the 2023 Cricket World Cup semi-finalist, but they are without some key players like David Miller, Henrick Klaasen, Kagiso Rabada, and Marco Jansen, among others.
