Cangas del Narcea, in the southwest of Asturias, is one of Spain's most beautiful destinations to visit in autumn.

The town is a gateway to the Muniellos Nature Reserve, Spain's largest oak grove and one of Europe's best-preserved forests, offering picturesque views of golden foliage.

Visitors can explore a diverse array of tree species, including oak, birch, beech, as well as holly and yew trees, which are especially striking during autumn.

Designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2000, the Muniellos Wood provides a serene hiking experience through some of the most untouched natural landscapes in the country.

A user on Tripadvisor attested: "The hike is beautiful and even if you can only cover a small portion - the shorter hike has a wheelchair accessible 500m or so at the start - it is a must-see."

Nature lovers can spot rare wildlife here, including the endangered Cantabrian capercaillie and the iconic brown bear- a symbol of European virgin forests.

Only 20 people are allowed into the reserve per day, and each person can only visit once a year; so make sure to apply online and get your passes well in advance.

The village itself is steeped in history, offering a peaceful retreat with a pleasing backdrop of verdant mountains and winding streams.

Stop by Parador de Corias, or Monastery of Corias, a landmark which has been deemed a National Historical-Artistic Monument.

While the basement houses a museum, other facilities include an indoor swimming pool, a sprawling library, a Tuscan-style church, and even a spa.

A Tripadvisor user raved: "Extraordinary monastery! This is a parador not to be missed. Beautifully restored and maintained with a fascinating history."

While another said: "The breakfast buffet is to die for, one of the best I have ever tried."

Cangas del Narcea's proximity to nature, combined with its charming village and laidback lifestyle, makes it an ideal autumn getaway.
