A beautiful and historic seaside town that is said to be the sunniest place in has controversially also been named the country's most "boring". Sitting on Scotland's North Sea coast, around 30 miles east of Edinburgh city centre, Dunbar has a rich cultural history and is a thriving destination thanks to its sandy and picturesque countryside. The former fishing town, best-known for its 12th century castle ruins, is distinctly lacking in more modern attractions, however, leading to its ranking as the most "boring" town in Scotland, and the fourth most boring in the whole of the UK.
Suomi Casino analysed 26 UK seaside towns for the list, judging them on the breadth of their entertainment offerings, including the number of amusement parks, bars and restaurants, live music venues, casinos and escape rooms. To its apparent detriment, Dunbar was found to have no amusement parks, casinos or live music venues and "just" 27 bars and restaurants.
Blackpool topped the list, with more amusement parks, casinos and landmarks than any other coastal town in the country, while Morecambe in Lancashire was ranked most "boring" in the UK.
A spokesperson for Suomi told the : "When we travel abroad, many of us picture ourselves lounging by the pool or soaking up the sun on the beach - making the most of the warm weather we don't often get to enjoy in the UK.
"While a staycation can still offer those amazing moments, the unpredictability of British weather means it's wise to plan for more than just sunshine.
"That's why it's important to choose a destination with a wide range of entertainment options - from arcades and fairground rides to escape rooms, live music and great places to eat and drink.
"While you can't control the weather, you can ensure a fun and memorable getaway by picking a place that matches your idea of entertainment."
Despite its low ranking, Dunbar remains a safe holiday bet on numerous other counts - including for history buffs keen to explore the remains of the castle where Mary Queen of Scots hid out in 1566 after the murder of her private secretary in Edinburgh.
The town's geographical location and sheltering Lammermuir Hills have also given it the reputation of the driest and sunniest place in Scotland, with the hills acting as a barrier from south-westerly winds and causing them to lose moisture, causing clouds to disperse.
It also offers family facilities including a leisure pool complete with a wave machine and flume at East Links Family Park and acres of beautiful scenery in John Muir Country Park, which spans the East Lothian coastline.
