A popular renowned for its lively nightlife and beautiful beaches looks somewhat like a building site despite it being the start of the much anticipated summer season. Construction work is underway on world-famous promenade to give the resort a real lift as part of a large-scale renovation project in the visited by thousands of Britons each year.
The first phase of the two year project should be completed by next month. Initially, the building work was going to last well into the summer season but the Calvia council signed an agreement with the builders to reach a May deadline. However, with May just a couple opf weeks away Magaluf's promenade looks far from being finished with cranes and diggers dominating the landscape.
As a result the Mayor of Calvia, Juan Antonio Amengual, has apologised for the building work during a visit to see the new-look promenade by the Minister for Tourism Jordi Hereu Boher.
He said that the Spanish Government was spending heavily on improving resorts across the country and Magaluf was a good example.
The building work on the promenade is being done in two phases.
This initial phase of remodelling a 650-metre stretch of the promenade will have a budget of €3.9 million (£3.27 million) and will be funded by the European Union and the AETIB (Agency for Tourism Strategy of the Balearic Islands).

This phase began in October and is set to finish in May, while the second will last for the same period in 2025/2026.
As part of the development, artificial dunes will be placed on the beach and shrubs will be planted by them.
The existing palm trees will be relocated and new ones will be planted to create an oasis area.
At first, it was estimated the project would take 14 months to complete but after discussing with builders, the time was halved to just seven months.
This year, will host the annual convention of the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA).
