New Look will be shutting dozens of stores by the end of the year, with the latest closing in Scotland on July 1. Shoppers might relish the closing down sales, but the move is yet another hit to Britain's ailing high streets.
Another store, in Wales, is due to shut next month, bringing the total in the UK this year to 12, with another 26 going in Ireland. The fashion retailer has intended to trim its high street presence for a while, but it reportedly increased the number of planned closures after Rachel Reeves' Autumn Budget last year.
The first store to go was New Look's Wickford branch in southern Essex, which shut on January 24 after 15 years in business. While the closure came at the request of the landlord, New Look does not have any public plans to replace the store.
A spokesperson invited customers to "continue to shop with us at our nearby Basildon store", adding: "We would like to thank all of our colleagues and the local community for their support over the years."
Shops in Carillon Court Shopping Centre in Loughborough in the East Midlands, along with the one in Porth, Rhondda Cyon Taf in South Wales, also shut down. Sites in St Austell, Cornwall, and Team Valley Retail World, Gateshead, also closed.
