Liverpool boss Arne Slot warned first season will be a 'failure' and given two targets

icon Mark Lawrenson insists will have 'failed' in his first season if he does not win a trophy. The former defender also believes the Dutchman should secure a top-three finish in the Premier League.

Slot has embarked on an excellent start to life at Anfield. His side are top of the league after seven matches. The Reds have won all but one of their 10 outings across all competitions.

But it remains early days for the 44-year-old, who must prove he can consistently achieve results across an entire campaign. The former Feyenoord boss has been told his maiden season could even be a 'failure' if he does not win a trophy and achieve a top-three finish.

"Arne Slot will be aiming at all of the silverware available to Liverpool this season," Lawrenson told Instant Casino.

"It's always been the case at the club, you aim for everything and if you win one, that's great, and if any more silverware is picked up then fantastic. He's got the team and the squad to do it this season - he's inherited a world class group of players from Jurgen Klopp with a winning mentality.

"If Liverpool don't pick anything up this season I'd deem that a failure for them and Slot in his opening season as manager as well as finishing out of the top three in the league, but I don't see that happening.

"I'd be surprised if they didn't make top three though, as those three teams look to be quite far ahead of everyone else."

Liverpool face one of the toughest tests of Slot's tenure so far when Chelsea visit Anfield on Sunday. Slot already has the best record of any Liverpool manager from his first 10 matches, and will hope to extend his good start.

"It's actually also quite special if you know how many great managers Liverpool had," Slot said after his side beat Crystal Palace 1-0 before the international break.

"But I also said last week I think that I hope they don't only remember me in one, two, three, four, five years only for this. We are hoping to do more special things than this. And it also says the luck I had that I inherited a very good squad and very good staff to continue getting the results that Jürgen [Klopp] had here as well."
