At the time of writing, the highly questionable 'one in one out' deal is just about clinging to life and clunking into severely limited delivery. But what is breathtaking is the astonishment shown by the government as to why the deportations were so successfully and easily blocked.
What happened to the supposed forensic skills of the barrister turned Prime Minister, or did he totally miss the relevance of human rights legislation he cherishes so dearly? It seemed clear to everyone that these rights had the potential to make the policy go very wrong.

When I saw Robert Redford in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) I thought I wanted to, somehow, be a cowboy.
Then, seeing him in The Sting (1973) I wondered if I might one day be a raffish, charming rogue. Then after All The President's Men (1976), it became clear I had to become a journalist.
Admittedly, some of the jobs I've held at some of the companies I've worked for can clearly be seen as a mixture of all three, but those memories flooded back when it was announced last week that he had died, aged 89.
His ability to match being both strong and silent as well as cool and witty was unique and the partnership with Paul Newman set the tone for Hollywood 'bromances' to come.
He also championed younger actors and the independent movie sector and made films portraying an America you wanted to believe and to be in.
Farewell, a genuine Hollywood great.

What does that dreary left-wing bore Jerry Greenfield not get about capitalism? Having founded the ludicrously over-priced mush that is Ben and Jerry's ice cream with Ben Cohen, the two friends pocketed $326 million when they sold it to Unilever in 2000.
Since then, and almost non-stop, Greenfield has given us all the benefit of his left-wing views on matters such as defunding of the police and support for illegal migrants and caused the company that bought him out a series of issues.
He has now quit but as the man who put the 'Doh!' in Cookie Dough, is unlikely to be missed.

The latest group to express the demand they should be able to work from home are our teachers. This is plainly risible - and also sets a terrible example to the children they are meant to be teaching.
But where will this lunacy end? It is a fact: some jobs cannot be done from home.
Or will firefighters, bus drivers and surgeons ask to be next?

As the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) indicates to the Chancellor that they are likely to cut their estimates for productivity growth ahead of her November Budget, it is reported Rachel Reeves is gearing up to blame the Conservatives for the gaping hole in the finances.
When will they realise we are heartily bored with and no longer believe in their protestations about a £22 billion black hole, deporting 35,000 people from this country and smashing the gangs?
