'I was in Paris for the PSG celebrations - this is what it was really like'

The fireworks and the noise started in the late afternoon and just got louder and louder. All five Paris Saint-Germain goals in Munich were followed by more pyrotechnics in the sky over the French capital. Novak Djokovic, playing the night match at Roland Garros, kept track of the score by the cheers and Mexican waves during his match. "I was like: 'Wow, I mean, there's a lot of goals from Paris," laughed the Serbian superstar.

I watched the Champions League final on the sixth floor of the Court Philippe-Chatrier with the Djokovic match on one side and the Paris skyline on the other. At the end of the record win, the nearby Parc des Princes exploded in colour and then the 48,000 fans watching on giant screens poured out into the streets in the 16th arrondissement.

The scenes were repeated throughout France as fans celebrated only the second ever Champions League win - the first back in 1993 by rivals Marseille. After witnessing Crystal Palace's FA Cup win at Wembley, it was another reminder of how much sporting success means to people.

There was trouble - and two people died and over 200 were arrested - but the scenes I witnessed were unrestrained joy and pride among the smoke bombs, flares and firecrackers. Fans congregated in the centre of Porte d'Auteuill singing and chanting - and brought out their young children on the streets to witness football history.

Cars stopped in the middle of the road to join the party. Or were stopped by fans anyway and one car had a smashed windscreen. Through the smoke, I saw four people and a PSG flag pass on one moped and a Citroen 2CV with more fans on the roof than inside. PSG is a big-city club owned by Qatar but this was a win for France.

Every newspaper splashed on the win on Sunday with many playing on the name of man-of-the-match Doue which means gifted in French. It was a night where the Gallic nation showed the sporting world la joie de vivre.
