Douglas E. Turner, best known for his work on shows like The X-Files and films including Deliverance, has at home at the age of 93. The star died on May 5th, though his death has only just been made public, and no cause has been given. He leaves behind his wife of 37 years, retired sound editor Justine Turner.
Turner was best known for his work as a recording mixer, who worked with John Boorman on the cult classic Deliverance in 1972. He was also famed for his sound work on David Lynch's The Elephant Man, and for working on two seasons of The X-Files from 1995 until 1997.
He was awarded an Emmy in 1996 for his mixing of the third-season episode Nisei, and was nominated for two more Emmy awards: one in 1989 for his work on NBC's The Hijacking of the Achille Lauro and another in 1990 for the CBS TV movie Caroline.
He was also responsible for sound mixing on the Oscar-winning short film The Old Man and the Sea in 1999.
Tributes for the star have been flooding in online, with one fan writing on social media: "This is very sad news." Another added: "I adored Doug. We met at Cannon Films and he called all of us American kids 'gov'. Wicked sense of humour and what a magnificent resume. Happy to report, I was there when he met his future wife (Justine) whom he remained with for 37 years. You'll be greatly missed, Gov."
Another said: "Legend behind the sound - guys like Turner built the atmosphere for risk-takers. Indie crews still chase that raw edge." While a fourth echoed: "Rest in peace, legend. Such a legacy."
Douglas and his wife Justine met at Cannon Films in 1987 and became engaged within a month, marrying within three months of meeting. He also leaves behind their daughters Sierra Rose and Glynnis, sons Malcolm and Steve, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
