Caitlin Clark has been dubbed an inspiration by star Victor Wembanyama. The WNBA Rookie of the Year was instrumental in Indiana Fever making the playoffs for the first time since 2016, setting 11 incredible records in the process - including most assists for a single season (337) and the most assists in a single game (19).

And while the 22-year-old Iowa native's side were ultimately ousted by Connecticut Sun in the first round, Clark can certainly hold her head high for her efforts throughout her first professional season. Rather than teaming up with Chicago Sky's Angel Reese to play in the Unrivalled League in the off-season, Clark has announced that she will be taking a break from the sport to reflect on an incredible debut year.

Taking to social media, she wrote: "Year one [tick emoji] - thank you to the many people who have supported me as I've been able to live my childhood dream. I'm filled with gratitude as I reflect on this past year of my life. See you all in year two."

And not only has Clark made an impact on her colleagues and rivals, as well as fans of the WNBA - but San Antonio Spurs centre Wembanyama has also admitted that he has found himself in awe of the youngster. Sitting down with his side, he was asked: "Who is a WNBA player that inspires you, and what makes her stand out to you?"

To which, the Frenchman responded: "I think Caitlin Clark. When she was in college, the only college player that I was really in awe of the game you know. I'm saying, men and women's college basketball - she's probably the most impressive I've seen."

Clark spent four years at the University of Iowa, winning back to back national player of the year awards and setting a new NCAA scoring record before turning pro this year. Prior to that, she impressed by bagging two gold medals at the FIBA Under-19 World Cup in 2019 and 2021 respectively, as well as a gold at the FIBA Americas under-16 Championships in 2017.

Back in April, Clark was selected as the first overall pick of the 2024 WNBA draft, selected by Indiana Fever and signing a rookie scale contract with the side later that month. She finished the regular season with an average of 19.2 points per game, as well as a league-high 8.4 assists and 5.7 rebounds per game.

She achieved a league-high 122 three-pointers - also becoming the fastest female to break the 100 three-pointer mark in just 34 games - while leading her side to their best record of 20-20 in a single season. She was also the first WNBA player to record two triple-doubles, scored the most points from her position as a point guard in a single season, and has made the most points as a rookie overall in WNBA history.

She received 66 out of 67 votes to be named as the WMBA's Rookie of the Year - with one reporter opting to give their vote to the aforementioned Reese instead. Basketball fans worldwide will be excited to see exactly what Clark can do when she returns to the game for the 2025 season.
