Paris Olympics 2024: The 2024 Olympics kicked off in Paris with a stunning opening ceremony that set a new precedent. Thousands of athletes sailed along the River Seine, passing vibrant performances on bridges, banks, and rooftops, creating an unforgettable spectacle.
For the first time, the Olympics chose a waterway instead of a stadium for the opening ceremony. The nearly four-hour event reached its climax when French judo legend Teddy Riner and sprinter Marie-Jose Perec lit a cauldron shaped like a hot air balloon, which soared into the Parisian sky.
The ceremony featured a breathtaking display of blue, white, and red fireworks that raised the Tricolore above Austerlitz Bridge. A total of 6,800 athletes from 205 delegations traveled on 85 boats and barges, passing by some of Paris' most iconic landmarks.
Adding to the excitement were surprise performances by US singer-songwriter Lady Gaga, who delivered a lively cabaret number, and a heartfelt appearance by Canadian icon Celine Dion.
The day started with significant disruptions as arson attacks affected the French train network, and heavy rain in the evening altered the original plan by artistic director Thomas Jolly to use the sun to "make the water sparkle." Despite the rain forcing athletes to don ponchos and umbrellas, it didn't dampen the spirit of the event. The ceremony told a rich story of French history, art, and sport through 2,000 musicians, dancers, and performers.
The US and French delegations were the last to parade, with the US preparing to host the next Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028. Rower Helen Glover and diver Tom Daley proudly carried the flag for Great Britain, which is celebrating Paris' third time hosting the summer Games, the first in 100 years.
In his opening remarks for the 33rd Summer Olympics, International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Thomas Bach emphasized the unifying power of the Games. "You are now part of an event that unites the world in peace," he told the athletes.
More than 10,500 athletes will compete in 32 sports during the Games, which will conclude on August 11.
