Mayawati Calls for Dalit Leaders to Cut Ties with Congress Ahead of Haryana Elections

In a bid to strengthen Dalit representation ahead of the Haryana Assembly elections, BSP chief Mayawati urged Dalit leaders on Monday to break ties with the Congress and other "casteist parties." Her remarks were part of the BSP and Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) alliance's efforts to present themselves as a pro-Dalit alternative in the state.

Mayawati took to X to voice her concerns, accusing the Congress and similar parties of exploiting Dalit leaders during crises, only to marginalize them during better times. She stated, "Political developments have shown that the Congress and other casteist parties remember Dalits only in difficult situations, appointing them to key positions temporarily."

Highlighting ongoing discrimination, she remarked, "In good times, these parties often sideline Dalits, as currently seen in Haryana."

Drawing inspiration from Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, Mayawati encouraged Dalit leaders to distance themselves from these parties. "These marginalized Dalit leaders should be motivated by their messiah, Baba Saheb Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, and work to keep their communities away from such parties," she stated.

Mayawati referenced Ambedkar's resignation from the central government to underscore her point, recalling her own resignation from the Rajya Sabha in 2017 over Dalit issues in Saharanpur. "Ambedkar resigned for the dignity of the weaker sections. Inspired by him, I also stepped down when denied a voice on atrocities against Dalits," she said, urging Dalits to follow his example.

Additionally, she accused the Congress of historically opposing reservation policies for Dalits and backward communities, specifically targeting Rahul Gandhi. "The Congress has consistently been against reservation. Rahul even announced plans to abolish it abroad. People should be wary of such anti-Constitution and anti-reservation parties," she warned.

The Haryana Assembly elections are scheduled for October 5, with results to be announced on October 8.
