Army Leads Efforts to Repair 100-Metre Breach in Vijayawada Flood Crisis

Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh – The Indian Army is spearheading rescue and repair operations in flood-stricken Vijayawada following the overflow of the Budameru rivulet. A major breach, measuring nearly 100 metres wide, has exacerbated the flooding crisis in the region.

Cause of the Breach

The Budameru rivulet, which traverses Vijayawada, overflowed, resulting in extensive flooding. While local authorities managed to address two smaller breaches of approximately 10 metres each, the third breach expanded significantly due to intense water pressure, complicating control efforts.

Army’s Repair Strategy

To address the breach, Army engineers have implemented a solution involving Gabion Baskets, which are wire containers filled with stones. These baskets are being stacked to form a 4-metre-high wall, a technique known as rock armoring, intended to prevent further water intrusion and stop the breach from widening.

Logistical and Medical Support

In addition to the repair work, the Army is providing crucial logistical support. Hesco Bastions—modern barriers filled with sandbags—are being used to block the floodwaters. A total of 16,000 sandbags have been prepared, with 1,800 filled and ready for deployment. Troops from the Madras Regiment and Army Medical Corps are actively involved in these efforts.

Medical aid is also being prioritized, with around 200 flood victims receiving assistance so far. Coordination with the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority is underway to set up a base camp for more efficient relief operations.

Flood Impact and Ongoing Relief Efforts

The floods have claimed 33 lives, with approximately 46,320 people displaced and housed in 226 relief camps. Fifty teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are continuing their relief and rehabilitation work. Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has conducted an aerial survey to assess the damage and guide ongoing efforts.
