How dangerous is high blood pressure?
High blood pressure, often called the “silent killer”, not only affects the heart but can also slowly damage the liver. Many people ignore its symptoms, attributing them to fatigue, stress or aging. According to a study published in Frontiers in Medicine, people with high blood pressure have an increased risk of liver fibrosis, especially those with metabolic disturbance-associated fatty liver disease (MASLD).
If you feel tired even after resting and are always lethargic, this could be a sign of liver stress. High blood pressure affects liver function, which leads to poor energy production and nutrient metabolism. This is different from normal fatigue, sometimes accompanied by brain fog or difficulty in concentration.
Abdominal pain or liver enlargement
Pain or heaviness in the upper right abdomen can be a sign of liver swelling or enlargement. It is often mistaken for indigestion or gas. Medical imaging such as ultrasound can detect liver enlargement in time and intervention can be done before serious damage occurs.
Jaundice
Jaundice or a slight yellow colour in the skin or eyes is a clear sign of liver disturbance. High blood pressure can aggravate liver conditions, which increases bilirubin levels.
Do not ignore even mild skin tone changes.
Swelling in the legs and abdomen (Ascites)
High blood pressure can reduce the liver's protein production capacity, leading to fluid retention in the body. This can show up as swelling in the legs, ankles, or abdomen.
Change in color of urine and stool
Dark urine and pale stools are signs of problems with liver function. Dark urine means high bilirubin, while pale stools are a sign that bile flow is not proper.
How to protect liver health
• Keep blood pressure under control.
• Adopt a liver-friendly diet.
• Keep getting routine liver function tests done.
• Contact the doctor if symptoms appear in time.
It is important to take care of liver health along with high blood pressure. Early identification and proper care can prevent serious problems like cirrhosis, liver failure and metabolic disorders.
