Television actress Shubhangi Atre, best known as 'Angoori Bhabhi' from the hit show Bhabhi Ji Ghar Par Hain, recently shared the heartbreaking reason behind her separation from her ex-husband, Piyush Puri. Speaking in an emotional interview, she revealed how alcohol addiction shattered their 17-year-long relationship.
A Long Marriage Marred by Addiction
In a candid conversation with Siddharth Kannan, Shubhangi said she discovered the severity of Piyush's alcohol dependence only after marriage. "I gave my 100% to the relationship. But over time, I realized things were spiraling out of control," she said, wiping away tears. During the COVID lockdown, she spent extended time at home and witnessed firsthand the damaging extent of Piyush's addiction.
Daughter Was the First to Notice
Shubhangi shared that her daughter, Ashi, used to quietly mention Piyush’s drinking habits, saying he would become irritable after consuming alcohol. This concerned her deeply. Despite her efforts, including multiple attempts to convince Piyush to attend rehab, he refused to seek help.
Steroid Use Worsened His Condition
She revealed that in 2018, while undergoing treatment involving steroids for a transplant-related issue, Piyush's drinking worsened. He had even been hospitalized, and doctors had warned him to change his lifestyle. “Still, nothing changed,” she said.
Separation Was the Last Resort
After trying for two years, Shubhangi took the painful decision to part ways in 2020. “It took a toll on me mentally,” she said. Despite the divorce, she continued to support Piyush financially. But his addiction remained.
Ex-Husband’s Death in 2025
Just months after their divorce, Piyush Puri passed away in April 2025. When asked if she misses him, a visibly emotional Shubhangi paused and simply said, “Sometimes.”
