Manchester United fans have praised Alejandro Garnacho’s heart-warming gestures to team-mates Marcus Rashford and Antony after they scored their goals against Barnsley.

A rampant United dismantled League One side Barnsley with a 7-0 win in their Carabao Cup third round tie on Tuesday. Rashford, Garnacho and Christian Eriksen all scored braces at Old Trafford, while Antony netted his first goal of the season from the penalty spot.

Argentine winger Garnacho, 20, claimed the man of the match award for an exhilarating performance which included two well-taken goals and two assists for Rashford. But the youngster also impressed with his mentality by showing he was a great team player.

His joy was evident after Rashford and Antony found the net, with both players having suffered torrid campaigns last season and long stretches without goals. Garnacho, who played a sublime long ball to Rashford before the Englishman’s first goal, ran to his team-mate and encouraged him to do his trademark celebration.

Rashford had not done the celebration for some time after receiving enormous criticism for his on-field performances and off the pitch transgressions. Garnacho’s prompting led to him and Rashford both doing the 'pointing to the head' celebration together.

The gesture was spotted by a Red Devils supporter, who tweeted: “I love how Garnacho reminded Rashford to do his celebration and sprinted over to Antony to make sure he enjoyed his moment too.

“Sometimes it’s the little stuff like this which makes a huge difference to team spirit. Good to see from a young lad.” Another fan replied: “Absolutely love this kid. A true United player.”

Antony tucked away his penalty in the 35th minute, having won the penalty after being brought down by the Barnsley keeper. Garnacho knew exactly how much the rare goal meant to the Brazilian winger, being the first to embrace his fellow South American and planting a kiss on the side of his head.

Garnacho has been one of United’s most exciting and consistent players since breaking into the team two seasons ago under Erik ten Hag. He scored 10 goals last season, including one in the FA Cup final victory over Manchester City, and already has four in six appearances this season.

He is expected to be in action again on Saturday when United travel to south London to take on Crystal Palace in the Premier League. Ten Hag’s men will be looking for another convincing performance after a 3-0 win over Southampton in the league last weekend.
