An off-duty fireman managed to save the lives of several children when the coach they were riding in overturned yesterday.
The 70-seater coach was en route back to Minehead Middle Schoolafter taking the nine and 10-year-old students on a day trip to Exmoor Zoo when itcrashed on a remote stretch of the A396near Wheddon Cross. One of the children tragically died, while 21 others were admitted to hospital.
An off-duty firefighter travelling behind the bus has been hailed a hero after he leapt into action and started freeing passengers immediately. At a press conference, Gavin Ellis of Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: "I'm grateful to the off-duty firefighter who was travelling behind the coach at the point of the collision who was able to start taking immediate [action] to start releasing those casualties from the bus."

Chief Superintendent Mark Edgington of Avon and Somerset Police shared the awful news of the child fatality. He said: "We can confirm tonight that one child has sadly died.
"A formal identification process will need to be carried out, but our thoughts and sympathies are with their family, who we are in contact with. A specially-trained officer will be providing them with support."
This morning, school teachers spoke of their pride in pupils involved in the crash. One said on social media: "My amazing students, I couldn't be prouder of you all and how incredibly brave you've been.
"You looked after each other in what was a life-changing event, we will get through this together. I feel so lucky to be your teacher."
A volunteer said children involved in the crash had been left "in shock beyond belief." Wheddon Cross resident Jill, the chair of the local village hall, said support is being given to children who were on the bus.
She told The BBC: "We've been giving them hugs and telling them how brave they've been. It's just really tragic for the parents and the children themselves. They are clearly in shock beyond belief. We are in shock too in the village."

Representatives for Minehead Town Council said they were left "deeply shocked and saddened" by the incident.
They said in a post on social media: "We are deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic incident today involving children from Minehead Middle School. Our hearts go out to all those affected. The children, their families, their friends and the wider school community.
"As a close-knit community, we are devastated by this news. The impact of this event will be felt by many, and we stand in solidarity with everyone affected during this incredibly difficult time. We would also like to extend our deepest gratitude to the emergency services for their swift response, professionalism and unwavering dedication throughout the afternoon.
"Our thoughts remain with all those involved."
