It was an interesting joke - but perhaps Chelsea won’t be doing similar in the future.
In a social media post on Twitter from the club’s official account, Chelsea FC Women announced the transfer of Sam Kerr to Liverpool. Cue meltdown among supporters.
The declaration, made bang on 1.45pm, came with no preamble. No warning. It simply just stated: “Sam Kerr has joined Liverpool on a permanent transfer.” Replies promptly arrived, supporters shocked and stunned by the news.
“Stop it Admin, my heart stopped for a few secs” wrote one fan. “That’s unacceptable” said another. “WHAT????????” declared a third.
Needless to say, fans weren’t particularly pleased at the thought of one of their biggest stars - albeit one who missed pretty much all of last season due to injury - moving to join a major rival.

Within three minutes, clarification arrived from the Chelsea admin that it had in fact been a joke and that the Matildas captain - who joined Chelsea in 2020 from the Chicago Red Stars - wasn’t in fact going anywhere.
They quote tweeted Liverpool’s post, announcing the permanent signing of Scottish namesake Sam Kerr from Bayern Munich - having been on loan since January - with the caption; “Ohhhhhh you thought…”
“Okay that was a stressful couple seconds not gonna lie!” declared one comment.
“Had me for a second..” said another. A third joked: “This is July!!! We are not in April anymore!!”
Of course, this being Elon Musk’s Twitter, - ahem, X - there are still plenty of messages arriving to the first message, unable to believe that Chelsea’s Kerr is being moved on.
Wonder if the men’s account will try this with Cole Palmer any time soon?
