Indian Formula 2 racer Kush Maini was lucky to survive a horrific crash at the start of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Sunday.

The Invicta Racing driver couldn't get going when the five lights went out resulting in Pepe Marti and Oliver Goethe crashing into him from the back of the back grid.

Maini's car was left in a mangled ruin but he fortunately managed to walk away unscathed from the accident. Marti and Goethe also did not suffer any injuries but all three were left terribly shaken and shocked from the incident. Their cars were completely destroyed after hitting Maini's vehicle at full speed.

The session was immediately red-flagged by the FIA.

Gautam Maini, father of racing driver Kush Maini, reassured PTI that his son was in good health after the recent incident.

"Kush is doing well. As part of standard procedure, he underwent all necessary medical tests, and the results came back normal," he stated.

Maini, currently in his second season of Formula 2 with Invicta Racing, holds 11th place in the championship standings. The race itself was won by Richard Verschoor of the Trident team.

While safety in motorsport has significantly advanced over the last 20 years, the risks remain high. In 2019, Formula 2 driver Anthoine Hubert tragically lost his life after a crash at Belgium's renowned Spa-Francorchamps circuit. Hubert was just 22 years old.

Another fatal incident occurred in 2014 when Jules Bianchi, 25, passed away following a collision with a recovery vehicle during the Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix. In response, the FIA introduced the Halo device, designed to protect drivers' heads, across all Formula 1 cars after Bianchi's accident.
