Two men died in a late-night accident on the Pen-Khopoli Road when their motorcycle was struck by a speeding four-wheeler near Hotel Yogiraj around 12.15 am on May 15.
The deceased were identified as Omkar Ashok Waghmare (19) and Akash Sachin Pawar (22), both residents of the same village. According to Pen Police, the duo was returning from a pre-wedding function and heading to a haldi ceremony in a nearby village when the crash occurred. Their motorcycle was reportedly hit by a four-wheeler coming from the opposite direction at high speed.
According to police, the car was being driven recklessly. "The absence of speed breakers on this stretch often results in overspeeding. The impact occurred from the right side of the car, causing the bike to crash,” said an investigating officer.
Both victims sustained severe head injuries and were declared dead on the spot. The incident was reported to the police by a local resident, Barkaya Yashwant Hilam (35).
A case was registered against the driver under Section 106(1) (causing death by negligence) and Section 281 (rash driving) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), along with Section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act for dangerous driving.
