A shocking incident was reported from Subhash Nagar MHADA Colony in Bhandup (West), where a 38-year-old mathadi worker attempted suicide by shooting himself with a locally-made pistol after suffering heavy losses in the stock market.
According to police, the victim, identified as Manoj Chandrakant Bhosale, shot himself between 4:30 am and 5:15 am on Thursday while on the stairs of his residential building. Manoj, who had invested a substantial sum in the stock market, had been under immense mental stress due to recent financial setbacks.
At the time of the incident, Manoj was descending from his seventh-floor flat (Flat No. 705) along with his wife and children, when he suddenly pulled out the pistol hidden in his waistband and shot himself in the neck. The loud gunshot alarmed his wife, Shubhangi Manoj Bhosale, who rushed to his aid and immediately informed the police. Shubhangi is a direct eyewitness to the incident and her statement has been recorded.
Manoj was rushed to Fortis Hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment. Police have seized the weapon from the spot. The pistol, described as a desi (locally-made) firearm, has been valued at zero rupees in the police report. Investigators are now trying to trace the source of the weapon.
Senior Inspector Dattatray Khandagale of Bhandup Police Station said a probe is underway to determine how the victim acquired the firearm. The incident underscores the extreme mental pressure financial losses can inflict on individuals.
