Chennai Super Kings (CSK) suffered a major setback before the match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Captain Rituraj Gaikwad is out due to injury. Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been given the captaincy of the team in his place. He will now be seen leading the team in the upcoming matches in place of Gaikwad.

Chennai will play its next match against Kolkata on Friday. CSK has suffered a major setback before this match. Captain Rituraj Gaikwad is out of the entire season due to an elbow injury. This was confirmed by team coach Stephen Fleming. He said that Dhoni will now be seen leading the team in place of the star batsman.

Chennai Super Kings has surprised everyone by changing the captain in the middle of the season. However, this is not the first time that CSK has handed over the command of the team to someone else. Earlier, the team made Rituraj the captain just before the start of IPL 2024. Apart from Dhoni and Gaikwad, Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja have taken over the captaincy of the team. Raina was leading the team in Dhoni's absence, while Jadeja was made the new captain just before the start of the tournament in IPL 2022. However, the team's performance was very poor that season and Dhoni took back the captaincy after half a season and led the team to the title for the fifth time in 2023 under his captaincy.

Chennai has lost four consecutive matches.

Five-time winner Chennai Super Kings' performance in the current season has not been very good. In the five matches played so far, they have lost four times. They had defeated Mumbai only in the opening match of the season. Currently, the team is at the ninth position in the points table with two points and a net run rate of -0.889. Dhoni captained 226 matches and led CSK to victory in 133. He is the only captain to have won more than 100 IPL matches while captaining. He is followed by Rohit Sharma who has led the team in 158 matches and won 87 of them.
